ECOWAS stepping up efforts to combat money laundering

ECOWAS is stepping up efforts to block the activities of money launderers within the sub region.

In this light, Ghana is hosting a ”training of trainers” workshop for selected technocrats in member countries.

Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Ernest Addison in a message to participants, stressed the need for greater efforts to harmonize anti-money laundering protocols, so that the war against the canker can yield results.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, whose speech was read on his behalf by Joseph France from the Financial Stability Department of the Central bank, said issues of conflicts within the regulatory regimes of the various countries often constrain efforts at tackling money laundering activities.

This, he hoped will be addressed at the meeting.

The Director of Research and Planning, of the Inter – governmental action group against money laundering in West Africa, GIABA, Mu’azu UMARU, said a recent evaluation by GIABA showed substantial deficiencies in Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism in West Africa.
