The government of Ghana has issued a stern call for justice following the death of a 40-year-old Ghanaian citizen in South Africa. Bashiru Isak was killed on June 30 during violent anti-immigrant protests in the Khayelitsha township of Cape Town. Authorities in Accra are now pushing for a swift and comprehensive judicial response to this tragedy.

The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern regarding the growing frequency of xenophobic attacks. In an official statement released on July 1, the ministry stated it had received the news “with profound shock and sadness.”

The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has lodged an official protest with the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation. “Ghana demands from the South African authorities a full, transparent and expedited investigation leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. We also reiterate our call on the South African authorities to ensure enhanced protection for all Ghanaian
nationals in affected communities,” the ministry noted. Beyond domestic legal channels, the government has reminded South African officials of their broader responsibilities under international law regarding the safety and rights of foreign residents.

Ghana continues to utilize international platforms to address broader regional tensions. The government confirmed that a previously filed petition with the African Union (AU) regarding xenophobic violence in South Africa remains an active agenda item.
“Our formal petition on xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa remains active and we expect the AU to treat the matter with the urgency it demands at its next statutory meeting,” the ministry stated. This move highlights Ghana’s intent to elevate the safety of foreign nationals as a primary concern for the continental body.
Safety Guidance for Ghanaian Nationals
As diplomatic efforts continue, the government is facilitating the repatriation of Mr. Isak’s remains to Ghana for burial. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has extended its formal condolences to the grieving family.
