Women’s Rights activists in Ivory Coast have expressed anger over a proposed bill that will legalize polygamy for men, calling it a step backwards in the fight for equality.

According to a proposed law, the current matrimonial regime is a hypocrisy.

Former Ivorian Minister of Solidarity and Promotion of Women, Constance Yaï, did not hide her anger at a media briefing organized by the Ivorian League of Women’s Rights.

She said there is no polygamy in Côte d’Ivoire, adding that there are only men who have several mistresses. Polygamy was outlawed in the country in 1964.
