The governor of Kenya’s capital Nairobi, Mike Sonko, has been voted out of office over allegations of abuse of office and gross misconduct.

Some 88 out of 122 ward representatives who sit in the Nairobi county assembly voted for a motion to impeach him on Thursday.

Local media reports that Mr Sonko had gone to court to block the impeachment motion.

He reportedly sponsored a retreat for some of the representatives at the coast to prevent them from voting, according to local media.

The representatives on Friday said their Zoom accounts were hacked and used to vote for the governor’s removal, according to the Star newspaper.

Mr Sonko has not commented on the reports or his impeachment.

The motion will now proceed to the Senate where the impeachment motion will be approved or rejected.

The governor is allowed by law to fight his impeachment in court.
