Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Ogunboye Aremu Obasanjo, says the decision taken by ECOWAS to invade Niger with a standby force is not the right thing to do.

He said ECOWAS should not have come across as belligerent when the coup took place but should have come out with a statement about ameliorating things.

President Obasanjo was speaking on the sidelines of the 15th African Youth and Governance Convergence in Mankessim, the Central Region of Ghana.

ECOWAS decision to send military intervention has been heavily criticised. He attributed the spread of coups to deep-rooted causes in Africa which have not been addressed.

President Obasanjo said he is not the least surprised that the recent coups are being supported by citizens.
