South Africa expels Malawi diplomats over booze scandal

Malawi’s diplomats in South Africa have been expelled from the country after they were found guilty of peddling duty-free alcohol.

Malawi’s Foreign Affairs Ministry sources in Lilongwe said South Africa had given the diplomats and their families 72 hours to leave the country.

There are media reports that cash-strapped Lesotho diplomats bring alcohol into the country without paying duty and then resell to bars and restaurants.

South Africa’s Ministry of International Relations said the diplomats were found guilty of engaging in illegal trade in duty-free alcohol following an intensive investigation into their flouting of diplomatic privileges.
