A private helicopter carrying six individuals crashed on Wednesday in a rural region of Zimbabwe. Government officials confirmed that the aircraft went down in the Marondera district.
The location sits southeast and east of the nation’s capital city, Harare.
Authorities stated that no individuals survived the catastrophic impact. Emergency responders rushed to the scene immediately following the disaster.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana addressed the public regarding the tragedy on social media. Mangwana posted on X that four passengers, including a high-profile businessman, were on board along with two crew members.
He later updated his breakdown to reflect three passengers, two pilots, and the prominent figure. Mangwana confirmed the grim reality of the accident by stating, “Current information indicates that there were no survivors in this crash.”
Recovery and Identification Challenges
Police units and emergency personnel secured the wreckage shortly after the aircraft plummeted. Officials explained that formal identification of the deceased remains a complex process.
The intensity of the impact triggered an intense fire that engulfed the aircraft.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi provided insight into the difficult recovery conditions. Nyathi stated in a briefing, “They were burned, there was a fire and we will be trying to identify the people.”
Nyathi added further detail on the ongoing response by noting, “As we speak, responders are at the site and we will then be able to give more updates.”
Authorities reiterated that official confirmations of all victims would be released in due course once forensic verification concludes.
Profile of Prominent Victims

State media and family representatives verified that high-profile figures perished in the wreckage. State broadcaster ZBC News, quoting a family spokesperson, reported that among the dead were Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke.
Chivayo was a forty-three-year-old Zimbabwean businessman known widely for his heavy influence and high-net-worth status.
The prominent figure maintained deep ties to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the ruling political establishment.
His high-profile lifestyle frequently featured public displays on social media platforms.
He routinely broadcast private dinners and close-up meetings with regional heads of state, including South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, Kenya’s William Ruto, Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Eswatini’s King Mswati III.
Public Persona and Scrutiny
The late businessman built a reputation for distributing lavish gifts of vehicles and cash. Recipients often included celebrities, church leaders, politicians, followers, and random social media users who praised his online posts or President Mnangagwa.
Beyond his philanthropic displays, his commercial footprint drew substantial political and legal friction. His business dealings and political connections consistently attracted scrutiny and allegations regarding public procurement and election financing across Zimbabwe and neighboring countries, though he continually denied any wrongdoing.
Investigations into the precise technical cause of the Wednesday afternoon crash remain active.
As regional authorities continue their forensic work to formally identify all remaining victims, the tragedy leaves a stark void across Zimbabwe’s political and business spheres, prompting widespread national mourning and international attention.
