As the NPP Super Delegates Congress gets underway in a matter of hours across all 16 regions, the delegates face a crucial decision. They need to choose five out of ten flag-bearer aspirants who truly embody the party’s values and national vision.
One of these contenders vying for the highest office within the party is none other than the controversial figure, Kennedy Agyapong. You might expect that his outspoken and provocative manner would reduce his chances of being among the top five candidates. However, rather surprisingly, these exact qualities have actually enhanced his position. But why is that?
Think of Kennedy Agyapong as the Shatta Wale of Ghana’s political arena. Kennedy Agyapong, a Member of Parliament representing Assin Central, and Shatta Wale, a well-known dancehall artiste, are two prominent personalities in Ghana. Although they operate in different fields—Agyapong in politics and Shatta Wale in the music industry—they share some similarities.
Both Agyapong and Shatta Wale are recognized for their bold and provocative personalities. Agyapong, a Ghanaian politician, is famous for his candidness and his readiness to challenge powerful figures and institutions. Shatta Wale, a dancehall musician, is also renowned for his audacious lyrics, public statements, and his willingness to challenge established norms in the music world. These traits align with their audience and resonate with the broader public.
Additionally, both figures possess considerable influence and boast large followings. Agyapong’s political clout and widespread media presence have earned him a substantial audience. Shatta Wale’s music has garnered him a massive fan base, extending not only within Ghana but across Africa and even further. This popularity makes them credible contenders for public office due to their substantial support.
Kennedy Agyapong enjoys a robust and devoted support base. It’s not uncommon to hear people on the streets declaring that they hadn’t intended to vote in 2024, but if Agyapong were to become the candidate, they would certainly cast their votes. His supporters are convinced that he possesses the potential to invigorate the party’s support base for the upcoming election and potentially break the cycle of eight years in power that the party has seen.
Moreover, Agyapong stands out as a unique politician. He is perceived as detached from the current government’s failures and has consistently spoken out against corruption, promising to mend broken systems and revitalize the economy. This stance has instilled a degree of confidence among some delegates.
Importantly, Agyapong’s strong financial resources set him apart from other candidates, making him one of the most substantial contenders. This assures that funding the party’s campaign activities in 2024 won’t pose a challenge.
Additionally, his commitment to creating job opportunities for Ghana’s youth has attracted many. He has pledged, “I’m focusing on the youth of this country. I feel guilty that my children in America find jobs right after university. So, why do Ghanaian youth have to wait for 6, 7 years, or even longer after graduating to find jobs?” This pledge resonates with young people seeking prospects.
However, despite his extensive experience in parliament, Agyapong must convince voters that he possesses the qualities required for the role of President. Critics accuse him of lacking the demeanor expected of a president due to his at times harsh language. Nevertheless, Agyapong argues that his strong reactions are a response to what others say about him and asserts that he has changed.
In summary, Ken Agyapong’s unconventional approach to politics positions him as a serious contender. His outspoken nature, ability to connect with the grassroots, financial strength, and commitment to change make him a compelling choice. It remains to be seen whether his unique style will propel him to the presidency.
