Sustaining NDC’s victory: Delivering results and keeping the NPP in perpetual opposition

The people of Ghana spoke decisively on December 7, 2024, voting overwhelmingly for change and entrusting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with the mandate to restore economic stability, create jobs, and lead the country toward a more prosperous and equitable future. The failures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including economic mismanagement, excessive taxation, and neglect of the ordinary Ghanaian, resulted in their rejection at the polls. Now, with H.E. John Dramani Mahama sworn in as President and ministerial appointments well underway, the real work of governance has begun.

In just a few weeks, the NDC administration has already demonstrated its commitment to delivering on its promises. The swift removal of the E-Levy and other draconian taxes is a clear indication that this government is serious about easing the financial burdens on Ghanaians. Equally significant is the rolling out of the 24-hour economy initiative, which will create jobs, boost productivity, and drive economic growth. The government’s focus on revitalizing the agricultural sector, improving education, and ensuring youth empowerment signals a clear departure from the stagnation and hardships of the previous administration.

One of the most commendable actions taken so far is the appointment of youthful and dynamic individuals to key government positions. This bold move not only ensures that the country benefits from fresh perspectives and innovative ideas but also reinforces the NDC’s commitment to preparing the next generation of leaders. By prioritizing the involvement of young people in governance, President Mahama has sent a strong message that the future of Ghana belongs to all, regardless of age or political background.

A critical step toward strengthening democratic governance and sustainable national development is the establishment of the constitutional review committee, which was recently appointed and sworn in by the President. This committee’s mandate to reassess and modernize Ghana’s constitutional framework is a significant milestone in the country’s political evolution. It provides an opportunity to address long-standing governance challenges, strengthen institutions, and ensure that the constitution remains relevant in addressing the needs of a changing society. The NDC’s commitment to this process underscores its dedication to building a governance system that is more inclusive, transparent, and accountable.

The NPP’s defeat was a result of its failure to govern responsibly. After eight years in power, they left behind a weak economy, massive debt, and widespread disillusionment among Ghanaians. Their “Ghana Beyond Aid” slogan proved to be nothing more than rhetoric, as the country found itself in deeper financial distress under their watch. The NDC must ensure that Ghanaians never again experience such misgovernance. By staying connected to the people, prioritizing economic recovery, and maintaining transparency, the party can cement its position as the only political force capable of leading Ghana forward.

Sustaining power requires more than winning elections; it demands consistent delivery, public trust, and strong party structures. The NDC must continue to engage citizens beyond election seasons, ensuring that the needs of the grassroots are always reflected in government policies. Effective governance, coupled with a vibrant and united party machinery, will make it increasingly difficult for the NPP to stage any meaningful comeback.

Ghanaians have placed their confidence in the NDC, and expectations are high. The coming months will be crucial in setting the tone for a long-term transformation of the country. With a clear vision, a competent team, and the unwavering support of the people, the NDC has the opportunity to redefine governance and keep the NPP in perpetual opposition. The work has begun, and there is no turning back.
