The Daily Graphic calls for a national dialogue on the death penalty. It says Ghana has for the past 26 years, not executed anyone, and currently there are 180 prisoners on death row at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. It states that of the 198 countries of the United Nation, as many as 106 have completely abolished the death penalty, while 56 retain it on their statutes. The paper said one strong argument against capital punishment is the likelihood of sentencing a person wrongly, but it suggests that it is better for many guilty persons to escape punishment than for one innocent person to suffer. As the paper canvasses for the debate on whether or not to abolish the death penalty, it urges society to put in practical measures that will prevent crime.
The Ghanaian Times deems as timely and deserving, the President’s call on world leaders to exert their energies and resources to end extreme poverty. The paper says it is time world leaders heed to President Akufo-Addo’s call for collaboration to stop what it calls illicit financial flows from Africa which cost her 50 million dollars annually. It also says efforts must be made to curtail bad trade practices and corruption, because they are sources of energy that help the vicious cycle of poverty among the citizenry to spin. The Ghanaian Times therefore says as the world jaw jaw, the issue of poverty should constantly feature on their agenda, and efforts to eradicate poverty should be prioritised.
