Ghanaian music duo, Lali X Lola, are calling for the reinstatement of the “Group of the Year” category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
In a petition shared on their Facebook page on March 18, the Award-winning Afro-fusion and recording artists expressed concern that the absence of the category could discourage investment in music groups, which they say are vital to Ghana’s music landscape.
The pair argued that music groups bring a unique dynamic by blending diverse talents and fostering collaboration, thereby enriching the local music scene and strengthening its global appeal.
They added that removing the category risks discouraging the formation and sustainability of groups, which are often more complex to manage than solo acts.
Lali X Lola’s appeal has drawn support from some industry stakeholders, who point to the resurgence of music groups such as DopeNation, Keche, Team Eternity, and Bhad Mayors.
They have urged the TGMA Board to reconsider its decision, emphasising that reinstating the category would recognise teamwork, creativity, and excellence within Ghana’s music industry.
