South Africa Ministry of Communication calls for new TV license review

South Africa’s Ministry of Communications has called for a review of regulations on TV Licensing to include payment by users of streaming services platforms like Netflix.

Deputy Communications Minister Pinky Kekana said media consumption pattern has changed and TV license regime must be abreast of the change.

She said under the new proposal, streaming platforms and other non-terrestrial providers would be required to collect TV license from subscribers on behalf of the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

According to the Deputy Minister, the proposal will help the country’s public broadcaster to improve financially through the collection of fees from non-TV users covering consumers of other devices like laptops and mobile phones.
