Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Charles Soludo, has challenged academia and professionals to get involved in politics to influence public policies and programmes.

This he said is the only way the country can derive maximum benefit from their expertise.

Prof. Soludo was delivering a lecture on the topic ‘Making Economic Sense’ as part of activities marking the one year memorial of late Vice President, Kwesi Bekoe Amissah- Arthur, at the Economics Department of the University of Ghana, Legon.

Prof Soludo said this is the path the late Vice President pursued as an AcademicLecturer, Consultant, Public Officer, and a Politician, which affected positively the lives of people.

Prof. Soludo said it is not enough for academics and professionals to continuously remain in what he called their ‘comfort zones’ but join the public discourse instead of always criticizing.

He said taking the centre stage in the public discourse by offering themselves for public service will be more beneficial to the country.

Prof. Soludo said whoever occupies the Amissah-Arthur Chair at the Economics Department of the University of Ghana, must be someone who understands public policy and can blend it with economic research for the betterment of the country.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria asked the Ghanaian authorities to view the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Amissah-Arthur as an opportunity to equip the country’s health facilities with the state of the art technology.

Prof. Soludo sub-titled his lecture “K.B. Amissah-Arthur: Some Common Sense Ideas From A Dead Economist”.
