Coronavirus: Gov’t sets aside $100 million to enhance preparedness and response in Ghana

As part of stepping up efforts to prevent a possible outbreak of the Coronavirus, Government has set aside the cedi equivalent of one hundred million dollars, to enable health authorities to intensify education and put in place, preventive measures in the wake of the global scourge of the coronavirus.

President Akufo-Addo in an address to the nation last night said it is critical for Ghana’s surveillance system to be strengthened as neighbouring countries have all recorded incidence of the virus.

President Akufo-Addo also called on Ghanaians to suspend all foreign travels as part of measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

This is in addition to the ban on travel already placed on public officials.

He said video conference and other technological gadgets can be used to collect information and facilitate urgent meetings.

On Education, the President announced that the Ministry of Information has been tasked to lead an educational campaign, where up to date weekly health expert approved information, will be churned out to the public on the do’s and don’ts regarding the coronavirus.

He clarified that test results of all 57 suspected cases in Ghana have proved NEGATIVE.

The President reiterated the need to avoid handshaking completely and cover mouths when coughing and sneezing, to prevent the possible spread of Covid-19.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo addressed the nation on all major television networks across the country on the intended interventions to protect the public from contracting the virus.

While calling for an ”all hands on deck” approach in fighting the scourge of the virus, President Akufo-Addo specifically called on CSOs, FBOs, Universities, Educational institutions and other places where large gatherings are held, to immediately review and make provision for basic preventive behaviour.

President Akufo-Addo also expressed gratitude to the WHO, IMF, and the World Bank for their support to combat the global scourge, COVID-19.
