Government has justified its decision to merge the Ghana Institute of Journalism GIJ, National Film and Television Institute NAFTI, and the Ghana Institute of Languages, GIL, into a single University.

According to the Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh an assessment carried out realised these institutions do not qualify to be a University on their own, unless they are merged.

While NAFTI and the Ghana Institute of Languages remain institutes, the Ghana Institute of Journalism received a University status as far back as 2009 after it was given a Presidential charter. But the Minister of Education, Dr Opoku Prempeh speaking at the Meet the Press Series in Accra Tuesday, said all the instructions need some critical facilities before they can get to a University status, adding that the merger will give them the leverage to gain such facilities.
