Import duty reduced by 50%, effective April 4 – Veep Dr Bawumia

Ghana’s Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has hinted that there will be a reduction in import duty at the various ports in the country.

Speaking at a Town Hall Meeting held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra today (April 3), Dr Bawumia said import duty will be reduced by 50% whilst importers of vehicles will enjoy a 30% reduction.

The reduction in import duty takes effect from Thursday, April 4, 2019.

The Vice President admitted that import charges are “higher in Ghana than any African country”, a phenomenon he said was not appropriate, the Vice-President, who is the head of the Economic Management Team was emphatic that “it should be a flat rate across.”

Under the Port reforms, Dr Bawumia noted that the overarching objective is to reform and enhance the competitiveness of Ghana’s Port.

The maiden Town Hall Meeting was on the theme:, “Our Progress, Our Status, Our Future,” and was chaired by Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Marfo serves as the Team’s Vice Chair.

Other members include Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta; Agric Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto; Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu; Minister for Planning, Prof George Gyan Baffour; Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen; Minister for Monitoring and Evaluation, Dr. Anthony Akoto-Osei; and Joe Amoako-Tuffour who serves as Secretary of the Team.
