Alumni of Katanga hall in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) yesterday (August 10), staged a demonstration over attempts by the University authorities to convert the all-male hall to a mixed one.

The group petitioned President Akufo-Addo through the Minister for Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh not to go ahead with the process.

The demonstration follows an announcement made by the University’s Vice Chancellor early this year, about his intention to convert Unity and Katanga halls to mixed-gender halls.

This was intended to make room for female students on campus, and address the security risks faced by women living off-campus.

However, the Alumni and students disagree with management’s decision on the conversion, and are calling on the President to intervene.

According to them, if the decision stands, it will erode a long-standing tradition of the two halls, which must be guarded.
