Madagascar: Voting underway in Runoff Presidential Election

Voting is underway in Madagascar in the Malagasy Presidential elections Run-off between two former Presidents Marc Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina.

GBC24’s Ivan Amponsah is in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar and reports that after the keenly contested presidential elections in November, 2018 that saw 36 presidential candidates vying for the presidency, Andry Rajoelina and Marc Ravalomanana came tops, but they could not obtain the 50 percent plus one vote. That necessitated for the run-off elections the two.

Voting started at exactly 7:00am across the various polling stations in Madagascar.

Over 10-million Malagasy registered voters are expected to cast their vote to choose between the two former Presidents Marc Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina.

Among the issues confronting the next President are high unemployment rates, security challenges, deteriorating health care and education systems. They also expect the new President to tackle the rising spate of corruption in government and bring improvement in the general standard of living of the people.

At the Biroa Fandatsaham-Bato Voting Centre, GBC24’s correspondent caught up with one of the Presidential Candidates in the run-off elections Marc Ravalomanana. He was very confident of winning the run-off and promised to initiate policies to improve economic situation of the country.

On his part, Andry Rajoelina, says the economic conditions in Madagascar need a leader who has the competence to carry every Malagasy along to bring improvement and he represents that.
