Accra: Workers use procession to mark 2019 May Day

The Leadership of the Organized Labour Unions today (May 1) embarked on its first ever walk to precede the National celebration of Workers Day at the Black Star Square.

The historic event which started at the Obra spot at Kwame Nkrumah circle in Accra ended at the Black Star Square where the national celebrations was held.

Workers who took part in the walk used the occasion to call on government to address their concerns which bothered on salaries and poor working conditions.

Radio Ghana’s Nathaniel Nartey who joined the procession reports that the workers were not worried about being tired, with the prospect of spending hours on their feet at the Black Star Square after the 4 kilometre walk.

Workers from various organisations were visibly energized and ecstatic to be part of the historic event and showing no signs of fatigue, as they waited for the official commencement of the walk.

At 7am when Radio Ghana arrived at the Obra spot in Accra, workers of all 35 Organized Labour Unions had already converged at the venue.

The police were also on hand to ensure security and orderliness.

The Ministries District Police Commander Supt. Florence Owusu told Radio Ghana that adequate number of police personnel had been deployed for the procession while others were stationed at the Black star Square.

While some workers socialized with their colleagues from other organisations, others prepared their banners and placards to display during the procession.

Some of the inscriptions include “WHERE IS NAM 1, MONKEY DEY WORK BABOON DEY CHOP, WE NEED MONEY, MAKE THE PENSION SCHEME BETTER, among others.

Almost all workers Radio Ghana spotted were in their respective company T-shirts and sneakers.

At half past 7, the workers embarked on the walk from Circle through the Farrar Avenue to the TUC Headquarters then towards EOCO, the polo grounds before arriving at the Black Star Square amid drumming and dancing.

There were first time participants for this year’s celebrations, one of them is the insurance workers Union of UNICOF.

Radio Ghana also spotted four (4) ambulances during the procession, which was generally peaceful.

All participants of the one hour journey arrived safely at the Black Star Square safely.
