Police intercept quantity of ammunition, AK 47 rifle at Kpassa

Police at Kpassa, the capital of Nkwanta North District in the Volta Region have intercepted dozens of ammunition and an Ak 47 rifle.

Preliminary findings indicate that the weapons were being transported to the troubled Chereponi district, where deadly ethnic violence has escalated in recent days.

The ammunition were wrapped and hidden in boxes of Special Ice Mineral Water and were being transported to Chereponi in a Metro Mass Transit Bus.

The driver and mate of the vehicle were arrested and detained by the Police Monday. The fighting between indigenous Konkombas and Chokosis at Chereponi sparked last week and intensified in violent spillovers, causing total disorder and widespread state of fear.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, has visited Chereponi and Saboba to assess the extent of damage caused to the two towns as a result the recent ethnic clashes between the Konkombas and the Chokosis.
The visit was also aimed at meeting with the chiefs and people of the two groups to drum home the need to co-exist peacefully.
He was accompanied by the leadership of the Konkomba Youth Association and Representatives of Chokosis.
