Government intends to make rice the leading crop produced in Ghana by 2022. This will be done under the Planting for Food and Jobs policy and will be focus on the Northern part of the country.
It follows disturbing figures which show that Ghana loses over 1.6 billion dollars to rice import.
This is despite the fact that Ghana has fertile land in the Volta, Greater Accra, Eastern and Northern parts of the country to grow rice and even feed the whole of West Africa.
A Chief Research Scientist with the CSIR of the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute, Dr Roger Kanton who lauded the idea said this will greatly improve the Ghana’s economy.
Dr Kanton advised government on measures to take to achieve the set target.
