For decades, the public perception of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) was locked in a predictable mold. To the average Ghanaian, the state broadcaster was a venerable, albeit rigid, national institution—the home of official state broadcasts, formal evening news, and historical sign-offs. It was respected, but it was rarely viewed as trendy, native to contemporary youth culture, or digitally disruptive.

That status quo has been thoroughly shattered.

Driven by a new digital strategy and a growing team of young digital talents, GBC’s Social Media and Digital Department executed a masterclass in brand transformation. By leaning into Gen Z culture, deploying witty and unapologetically sarcastic tones, and meeting audiences right where they live online, the team engineered an organic digital revolution. Today, GBC stands not just as a legacy broadcaster, but as a digital juggernaut that redefined how state media engages the public—making an undeniable, rock-solid case for the Digital Media Team of the Year.

Embracing the Gen Z Pulse: Sarcasm as a Strategy

The digital transformation did not happen by playing it safe. Traditional media outlets often fear losing dignity by engaging in internet subculture. GBC’s digital team flipped the script, recognizing that modern audiences—especially Gen Z and millennials—crave authenticity, humour, and relatability over sterile institutional language. The team further put out educative, and informative explainers that have been consistently appealing and entertaining, without breaching the very core of journalism.

The department embraced the sharp, witty, and playfully sarcastic communication style native to contemporary social media. Instead of posting dry links, GBC’s handles began interacting with followers like a sharp-witted peer. They responded to comments with cultural nuance, matched online banter, and turned everyday broadcasts into viral moments. This bold pivot humanized the state broadcaster overnight. By demonstrating that it could laugh at itself and keep pace with fast-moving internet trends, GBC turned passive scrollers into hyper-engaged community members, growing its following organically and completely altering public perception.

The TV Licence Campaign: When Satire Met Civic Duty

The defining watershed moment for the digital team arrived during the high-profile digital campaign surrounding the national TV Licence. Historically, public discourse on the licence fee was fraught with public apathy, resistance, and cynical fatigue.

The digital team transformed this daunting institutional hurdle into a masterclass in public engagement. Through creative, culturally resonant, and humorous social media campaigns, they sparked a nationwide conversation. The content was so sharp, engaging, and culturally magnetic that it broke containment, crossing over from standard social media chatter into the highest corridors of power.

The campaign caught the attention of top government officials, drawing public praise from Ministers and turning heads at the highest levels of state. The buzz culminated in a personal invitation from the highest office, as the President of the land requested a one-on-one meeting with the Social Media Manager to unpack the secret behind the digital magic and acknowledge the phenomenal shift in public narrative. When a state institution becomes the benchmark for viral, intelligent public engagement, the rules of the game have changed forever.

Standing Shoulder-to-Shoulder with Private Media

The fruit of this relentless innovation is a digital ecosystem that commands respect across the political and corporate divide. Leaders from all sides of the political spectrum have publicly lauded the team’s grit. Notably, parliamentary leaders and prominent stakeholders have visited the GBC digital floor to commend the young, ambitious minds—many of them volunteers and attachés—who show up every day with unmatched passion to keep the state broadcaster competing fiercely with private media networks.

Changing the perception of a 90-year-old national institution is no small feat. It requires courage, creative brilliance, and a refusal to bow to convention. By turning cynicism into connection, and formal broadcasts into vibrant online communities, GBC’s digital team didn’t just update a social media page—they saved and revitalized the soul of public broadcasting for a new generation.

For permanently shifting the cultural zeitgeist, mastering organic digital growth, and proving that state media can be fiercely modern, witty, still informative, educative, and influential, GBC’s Digital Department is more than deserving of the Digital Media Team of the Year crown.
