Friday, September 25, Ghanaians woke up to disturbances in what Security Officials have confirmed as activities of the Homeland Study Group Foundation, which in May 2019 declared independence from what is known as Western Togoland, saying that they were no more part of Ghana. The group reportedly attacked two Police stations at Aveyime and Mepe, and seized 10 AK47 assault rifles after breaking into the Police armory. They ransacked the Police stations, released inmates in custody, physically assaulted and injured Police officers. The group also barricaded some major entry and exit points to the Volta Region causing a distraction to commuters. Security reports say there were threats to other major facilities in the region which was averted. Also, one person died and several others were injured during the exchange of fire between the security agencies and the Secessionists. Security agencies have so far arrested 31 members of the Secessionist Group who are helping the BNI and the CID with investigations. In a statement Sunday, September 27, government assured citizens of their safety and says there was no intelligence failure in Friday’s Volta Separatists incursion. GBC’s Rebecca Ekpe has been finding out the history behind and philosophy of the Secessionists and spoke to Security Analyst Colonel Festus Aboagye who explains that such agitations date back to the pre-independence era. Colonel Aboagye explains that in 2017 the group received major recognition and boost after it joined an organisation called the Under-Represented Nations and Peoples Organisation, which had affinity for minorities and also provided Political support, Research Information and Advice. He outlines the international dimensions to the secessionist activities and gives the objective to the formation of the Homeland Study Foundation.
