The Driver, Vehicle and Licensing Authority, DVLA, has launched the revised Highway Code and Service Delivery Charter in Accra.

The forty-nine-year Code was revised to make it suitable for current and future transport advancements. Launching the two documents, Deputy Minister of Transport, Frederick Adam said the documents will have positive impact on road safety and customer delivery service in the transport sector.

The Highway Code has been in existence since 1974 but with the advancement in the transport industry it became necessary for it to be revised to be abreast with modern trends.

A committee was therefore constituted in 2014 to revise it and after nine years of hard work the document is ready.

In 2018 DVLA established the Excellence Service Unit to lead the change in the service delivery of the Authority. With the establishment of the Unit there was a need to develop a charter to guide it hence the launching of the two documents.

Giving the overview of the Highway Code, Director, Driver Training, Testing and Licensing at DVLA, Kafui Semevo said the revised Highway Code provides a set of information and rules for all road users. It is therefore essential for Ghanaians to ensure safety on the roads.

The objective for the review is to ensure the Code remains relevant and conform to the changing trends in the transport sector.

Chief Executive of DVLA, Kwasi Agyeman Busia said the committee members that were tasked to revise the Highway Code were drawn from various institutions.

The committee commenced its work in 2014 and in 2019 a consultant was engaged to help come out with the final draft. He commended the team that worked on the documents.

Mr Agyeman Busia said the documents indicate the Authority’s readiness to modernize and enhance its services to clients.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Frederick Adam highlighted some key in the new Highway Code which includes clear and concise traffic signals and road signs.

He said the new Code will go a long way to ensure road safety and urged all road users to familiarize themselves with the guidelines and follow them diligently.

Road users were encouraged to get copies of the revised Highway Code to ensure safety on the roads.
