The former Director General of the National Development Planning Commission NDPC, Dr. Nii Moi Thompson has identified economic, infrastructural and social development as the pillars of growth in the local governance system.

At a round-table on reformed decentralised local governance system in the post election of MMDS in Accra, Dr Nii Moi Thompson noted that the three pillars in place will create jobs and economic opportunities for the local communities to contribute to national development.

The round-table is to examine both past and future Local Economic Development (LED) within a Reformed Decentralisation Local Governance System in the post Article 55(3) amendment.

It is also to generate debate over the implementation of Local Economic Development and sensitise the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies  and other stakeholders to the reformed decentralised Local governance system.

The round-table would also serve as a contribution to the debate on the role and instruments of localising the SDGs.

A Professor at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at the University of Ghana, Prof. Kwabena Asomanin Anaman said traditional leaders should be made to play an advisory role after the election of MMDAS.

The programme organized by the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), focused on Local Economic Development in Ghana: A Retrospective and Prospective Look in the Context of Multi-party Local Governance.
