Food insecurity looms in Central Africa Republic: More than 60 million dollars urgently needed – UN

The UN World Food Programme has cautioned that it is experiencing a deteriorating food situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) and needs urgent assistance to avert the precarious food crisis.
Addressing Journalists on the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, Global Spokesperson for the  UN World Food Programme, Tomson Phiri said $68.4 Million is needed to give the WFP a lease of life.
“The crisis situation is indeed devastating as acute food insecurity has hit 2.2 million people of the CAR which is nearly half of the population of the Central African Republic”, he lamented.
When asked what alternatives the World Food Programme has in store to manage the devastating food situation, Mr Phiri simply said “l wish we had”, explaining that the UN has no option, than to find the money to address the dire food situation.
It is clear that the impact of fuel shortages on the work of the WFP has become obvious.

The UN Word Food Programme Boss admitted that the Fund ìtself is struggling with its day to day commitments.

That is why the deteriorating food situation he said, needed urgent attention.

The 2018 Human Development Report indicates that 79% of the people in Central African Republic live in poverty.

27% of the population is displaced with about  3 million of them requiring Humanitarian assistance and 45% are also food insecure.
