Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, has expressed concern over the politicization of national issues, stating that Ghanaians are often their own worst enemies.

Speaking in an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Mr Nartey addressed the ongoing illegal mining crisis, stressing that the country must take responsibility for its challenges.

“We are the cause of our own problems,” he stated.

He also criticized the effectiveness of government task forces set up to combat illegal mining, arguing that their efforts have largely failed to produce meaningful results.

The former MP pointed out the political maneuvering surrounding the issue, saying, “The problem we face in this country is that we read politics into everything we do.”

He cited instances where opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives allegedly visited mining communities, assuring residents that mining activities could resume if they voted for them. According to Nartey, such political promises only worsen the crisis by undermining regulatory efforts.

The former legislator also referenced a widely circulated video allegedly showing a former Minerals and Energy Commission boss visiting mining sites. “Are you telling me you haven’t heard or seen that video?” he asked, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability.

He underscored the need to address the illegal mining crisis beyond mere political posturing.

As Ghana grapples with the implications of illegal mining, Mr Nartey’s comments serve as a call to action for both government and citizens to prioritize sustainable practices and effective governance over political gain.
