A member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has called for a broader approach to addressing Ghana’s transport challenges, stressing the need to not only expand the country’s road network but improve public transport infrastructure.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show during a discussion on government’s extension of the GH¢2 diesel relief on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 Mr. Jantuah said the country’s transport challenges cannot be separated from the state and capacity of its road network.
“I don’t know what the Transport Minister is doing with regards to our transport system, because I think it also has a lot to do with the kind of roads we have in this country,” he said.
He cited the ceremonial road from 37 to the traffic light at the National Theatre, questioning whether the stretch could be expanded to accommodate more lanes, including a dedicated lane for public transport.
“If you look at the ceremonial road from 37 right up to the traffic light at the National Theatre, look at how narrow that stretch is. If we wanted to turn it into three or four lanes, would we be able to do that? And could one of those lanes be dedicated specifically to public transport?” he asked.
Mr. Jantuah also raised concerns about the time required to execute major infrastructure projects, particularly when governments have four-year mandates.
“This now raises the question: Is a four-year term too short for a government?” he asked, adding that where roads cannot be expanded, government should consider alternatives such as overpasses.
He further stressed the importance of continuity in major infrastructure projects when there is a change in government.
“The concern is that if a project takes several years and a different government comes into power, will they continue with it?” he said.
Mr. Jantuah pointed to President Mahama’s continuation of some projects initiated by the previous NPP government as a positive development and expressed hope that such continuity would be maintained by successive administrations.
“We’ve seen President Mahama continue some NPP projects, which is a good thing. So let’s hope that this approach continues, regardless of which government comes into power,” he said.
He concluded by calling for the expansion of Ghana’s road network, stressing that such infrastructure projects should be viewed as long-term national priorities.
“The road network needs to be expanded, and these projects should be treated as long-term national projects rather than something that changes with every government.”
