Interdicted ACP Agordzor, eight others on trial for High treason to know fate on January 24, 2024

The interdicted Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzor, and eight others being tried for High treason, will on January 24, 2024, know their fate as the Accra High Court delivers judgment on the matter.

ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo and his accomplices are standing trial for allegedly plotting to stage a coup. The prosecution ended its case on July 12, last year after calling thirteen witnesses including seven soldiers. The accused persons have also ended their defence.

ACP Dr. Agordzo and the eight other accused persons were charged variously on April 24, 2021 for conspiracy to high treason, abetment to high treason and high treason.

A tenth accused person Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm who was the CEO of Citadel Hospital died in the course of the trial.

He was then in the witness box giving his testimony. Following a confirmation of his death the court expunged his evidence from the records.

The accused persons are said to be members of an association called Take Action Ghana, TAG, and had planned to stage demonstrations with an aim to topple the government.

The prosecution said in July 2019, a blacksmith from Alavanyo, in the Volta Region was allegedly contacted to manufacture 22 explosives, six ammunition and five pistols for the group.

The late Dr. Mac-Palm and another accused person Donya Kafui were arrested after test firing at the Teshie Military shooting range.

A search conducted on the premises of the Citadel Hospital allegedly uncovered six unregistered pistols, one registered pistol, 22 explosives, three grenades, 63 rounds of ammunition, two empty AK47 magazines and other machines used in manufacturing weapons.

The case, was heard by a three-member panel Justices presided by Justice Afia Serwaah Asare-Botwe.
