Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed government’s commitment to addressing key development challenges in the Komenda Traditional Area, with a focus on rehabilitating major road infrastructure and reviving the Komenda Sugar Development Company Limited.
She gave this assurance at the grand durbar of the 2025 Komendaman Nyeyi Festival in the Central Region.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also spoke about the importance of the Nyeyi Afahye itself, highlighting its role in preserving culture, honouring ancestors and heritage, and strengthening the bond between the government and the traditional community.
The Komenda Traditional Council used the occasion to renew its call for the refurbishment and operationalisation of the Komenda Sugar Factory to create sustainable employment opportunities for the many unemployed youth in the area.
According to the Council, restoring the factory’s operations would provide a significant boost to government’s flagship 24-hour economy initiative.
Addressing the gathering, the Paramount Chief of the Komenda Traditional Area, Okatakyie Komeh VIII, urged government to hasten plans to restart operations at the facility. He assured that local farmers are prepared to cultivate sugarcane to supply the needed raw materials once production resumes.
The Paramount Chief also underscored the need for an expanded landing bay to accommodate more ships and canoes used by local fishermen. He noted that a larger docking area would help ease the burden on road transport and reduce the rate at which heavy cargo trucks damage major roads.
The Komendaman Nyeyi Festival is an annual celebration that preserves the cultural traditions, stories, and values of the people of Komenda, while fostering unity and development among its 26 communities. This year’s festival was held on the theme, “Ensuring Sustainability through Education,” highlighting the community’s commitment to using education as a tool for lasting social progress.
