The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and the Majority leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has issued a condemnation of the Ghana Armed Forces following a violent incident in Bawku on July 13, 2025.

In a press statement released on Monday, the MP described the destruction of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaag Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, by military personnel as “unacceptable.” He called for immediate action from the highest levels of the military to investigate the incident.

“I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unacceptable act of destruction of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaag Traditional Area by some military personnel,” Ayariga said. “I demand an immediate investigation by the senior hierarchy of the military.”

The MP also condemned the violence that occurred the same day, including a gun attack by unknown assailants on a vehicle under military escort, urging an end to further attacks and retaliatory acts.

“The violent gun attack by unknown youth on the vehicle escorted by soldiers is equally condemned and further attacks must cease,” he stated.

Mahama Ayariga appealed to the youth of the Kusasi community to remain calm, assuring them that the government is taking steps to probe the infiltration of military ranks by rogue elements seeking to escalate tensions in the area.

“I however appeal to the Kusasis youth to calm down as the Government takes urgent steps to investigate the infiltrations into the ranks of the military by elements who seek to politicize and further destabilize the situation in Bawku,” he added.

He expressed sympathy to those affected by the violence, extending his condolences to families of the deceased and victims of military brutality.

“My condolences to the families of the bereaved and those who have suffered military brutalities as a result of yesterday’s unfortunate and deadly incidents,” Ayariga said.

  1. Both NPP, NDC leadership and the authorities should give us a break. They’ve all succeeded in establishing an extremist groups in Bawku. A country where certain groups are worshipped above the laws and constitution is bound to face situations like this. Leadership should better use the law and stop pampering individual tribes who doesn’t want peace in Ghana. Why is that tribe having problems with almost all the tribes in the north?
