Melcom Ghana has donated relief items worth approximately GHC500,000 to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support individuals and communities affected by the recent floods caused by severe rainfall across parts of the country.
The donation follows last Monday’s heavy downpour, which triggered widespread flooding, destroying homes and businesses while displacing several families in parts of Accra and beyond.
The relief package includes bags of rice, corned beef, bottled water, sugar, milk powder, towels, plastic plates, cups, bowls, buckets, and other essential household items to provide immediate support to victims.
Presenting the items on behalf of the Managing Director of the Melcom Group of Companies, Mr. Ramesh Sadhwani, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal expressed the company’s heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by the disaster.
“The images and stories of homes submerged, businesses destroyed, and families displaced have touched all of us. We recognize the immense hardship many of our fellow Ghanaians are enduring, and our thoughts remain with every person whose life has been impacted by this unfortunate disaster,” he said.
Dr. Awal noted that Melcom considers it its responsibility to support the communities it serves, particularly during difficult times. He revealed that the company had over the weekend identified about 400 members of staff who were severely affected by the floods and provided them with care packages.
He expressed hope the company’s relief donation would bring some comfort to affected families as they rebuild their lives.
Dr. Awal also commended NADMO, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and other emergency response agencies for their dedication in coordinating rescue and relief efforts under challenging conditions.
He further encouraged Ghanaians to remain united by supporting neighbours in need and observing safety precautions during the rainy season.
Despite suffering a major setback following a fire outbreak at its warehouse in Tema, Dr. Awal said Melcom deemed it necessary to extend support to flood victims as part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility.
Receiving the items, the Director-General of NADMO, Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, expressed appreciation to Melcom for the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of solidarity that complements government interventions.
“Though government efforts are in place, it is always encouraging to see this kind of solidarity from citizens and corporate bodies. We are grateful to Melcom for this donation and hope other organizations will emulate this example,” he said.
Public Relations Officer of Melcom, Joseph Parker, said corporate social responsibility remains a key pillar of the company’s operations.
“We know the victims have lost a great deal, and while this donation may not solve all their problems, we hope it will at least bring some relief and put smiles on their faces,” he added.
