A Member of Parliament for Asogyaman has proposed to the Business Committee to consider sitting twice a week in order to manage what he called daily skyrocketing petroleum prices in Ghana.

According to Thomas Ampem Nyarko, it’s time Parliament took a second look at its Standing Orders to reflect the reality on the ground when it comes to fuel prices, hence his decision to suggest that the Leadership amend the sitting period from four days (Tuesday to Friday) to two days.

The MP made the point while contributing to the business statement presented by the Majority Leader Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu for the third week ending Friday, November 11, 2022, on Friday, November 4, 2022.

He said, “Mr Speaker, we all know the business for this particular meeting is the budget, and I have observed that for the days we have been here, sometimes we come and in less than two hours we adjourned till the next day. I am asking that it will not be possible for the business committee to consolidate and park the activities, so instead of four days, I suggest we work two days a week in order to be able to save on the amount of money we are using for fuel.”

His proposition was premised on the fact that he bought fuel at an unprecedented price on his way home from Parliamentary business.

“Mr Speaker, a day before yesterday, I went to a Goil filling station at Legon; my lights were on, and I asked them to fill my tank. I got down to the shop to buy something when I came back, GHC3000 was my bill. I had GHC2100, and I had to call my colleague, Honorable Jajah, to send mobile money that I am avoiding using before I was able to pay my bill. We can stay for six hours a day instead of coming for two hours and we go back. That way, we can save GHC500 a week. The fuel situation is killing us.”

However, the Majority Leader, Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu, said in a response said, Parliament sitting twice a week will have a negative effect on productivity as well as the country’s and the government business.
