One-month closed fishing season ends today

The one-month closed season period for fishing is expected to end today. The closed season is observed as a way of reducing fishing pressure on stocks when they are most productive and avert depleting fish stock of the country’s maritime space.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture development with support from the Fisheries Commission began the 2022 closed season for artisanal fishers and industry trawlers from July one, to end on July 31, 2022, for artisanal and semi-industrial fishers.

Industrial fishers are however to observe the closed season from August 1 to August 31, 2022.

The measure is considered to be one of the tools for effective conservation and management of fishing activities.

Globally, closed seasons are considered as key fisheries management procedures to help protect fish stocks and marine space as well as increase the fish population.

The closed season observance in Ghana is in accordance with section 84 of the Fisheries Act, 2002, Act 625.
