Police arrest 13 illegal miners in Wasa Gyapa

The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested thirteen (13) individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities at Wassa Gyapa in the Western Region.

The suspects identified as Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, Yaw Dalame, Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, Francis Oduom, Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw were apprehended on Sunday, 19th May 2025, during a targeted anti-galamsey operation.

As part of the operation, over 120 chanfang machines used in illegal mining were destroyed by the police, while six motorbikes were confiscated to be used as evidence in court.

The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Tarkwa Circuit Court on Tuesday, 20th May 2025, where they will face charges relating to illegal mining under Ghana’s Minerals and Mining Act.

This arrest forms part of the Ghana Police Service’s ongoing effort to clamp down on illegal mining operations that continue to threaten the country’s natural resources and water bodies.

The Police Service has reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to combat illegal mining and protect the environment.
