The Political Science Department of the University of Ghana has launched its 60th Anniversary celebration.

The occasion will be used to recognize the enormous contribution of the political science department towards the training and production of world class professionals into the corporate world.

Former Speaker of Parliament and the special guest at the occasion, Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye questioned the attitude of duty bearers who solely rely on foreign imports for the administration of the country.

He called for a self-introspection in the country.

The Department of Political Science is one of the oldest and largest departments in the school of Social Science and College of Humanities of the university of Ghana. It was established in the 1961 / 1962 academic year with only three Ghanaians among the total teaching staff of seven.

As a discipline, political science became a part of a program structure of the university of Ghana in the late 1950s and was attached to the department of economics with politics, philosophy and economics as its main courses.

In October 1962, it became a separate department with its own head, faculty, staff and students. Since then, it has trained thousands of students who have become leaders in their fields of endeavor.

Former speaker of parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye disagreed with the country’s over reliance on foreign goods.

Prof. Oquaye advocated an affirmative action which when implemented would ensure gender parity in the corporate world especially during parliamentary proceedings.

To encourage and nurture excellence among the students, the department instituted two academic awards; the Right Hon Mike Oquaye Award for the best undergraduate female student in political science and the overall best student in political science.
