The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Cecilia Dapaah has asked the Tema Municipal Assembly to expedite action on the construction of additional cells at the Kpone Landfill Site.
According to her, this will help prolong the life span of the facility.
Mrs Dapaah during a visit to the site warned about the likely outbreak of an epidemic if additional cells are not constructed.
The Minister’s visit followed complaints by the residents of Katamanso and Kokompe Communities about the inconveniences caused by the unbearable stench from the site during rainy season.
The Kpone Landfill Site, is the only engineered facility in Accra which was designed to receive 500 tonnes of refuse daily but due to inadequate disposal facilities, it receives one thousand tonnes of waste daily.
It is estimated that the Landfill Site would be full in the next six months.
