The Supreme court has set the 16th of January to rule on the case of the construction of the national Cathedral by government.
This was after the seven member panel of judges presided over by Justice Sophia Adinyira had listened to the legal arguments advanced by the Deputy Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame and Counsel for James Kwabena Bomfeh, Dr Aziz Bamba.
Dr. Aziz Bamba argues that Ghana being a secular state must remain neutral in religion and treat all religions equally.
Responding to his argument, Deputy Attorney General, Godfred Dame, argued that a country that invokes the name of God in its pledge of allegiance and anthem, regularly observes religious holidays as public holidays and grants formal representation on a constitutional body to specifically named religious bodies cannot be said to subscribe to a vision of secularism that does not permit the Government to make reasonable accommodation for religion.
He said secularism does not mean the absence of religion.
A member of the Convention People’s Party, CPP, James Kwabena Bomfeh, is in court over government’s involvement in religious activities.
He is seeking the court’s intervention against Government’s decision to construct a National Cathedral as well as the organization of Hajj pilgrimages.
