The Tema Metropolitan Assembly, TMA, has stepped up efforts to empower persons with disabilities (PWDs) through targeted support, combining medical care, skills training, and livelihood tools under strict monitoring measures.

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive MCE, Ebi Bright disclosed that beneficiaries are receiving hospital treatment, assistive devices, training fees, and equipment to promote independence and sustainable livelihoods.

“Those who need medical care receive it, while others get the tools and skills to trade or work independently,” she said.

Madam Bright issued a stern warning to beneficiaries against selling any items provided under the programme. “If we go for monitoring and find someone has sold their support items, they will no longer receive assistance,” she cautioned.

The Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Robert Mensah, explained that the intervention is designed to holistically empower persons with disabilities by combining livelihood support, medical assistance and continuous monitoring to ensure sustainability.

He said beneficiaries who are unable to engage in strenuous economic activities are supported through structured programmes and supervised work environments, while those requiring medical attention receive treatment support and assistive devices to improve mobility and independence.

This year, 33 beneficiaries out of over 100 applicants were supported due to limited funds.

The MCE expressed optimism that increased allocations next year would extend aid to more vulnerable residents. Funded through the Assembly’s PWD allocation, the initiative is part of a broader push to improve livelihoods, healthcare access, and economic inclusion in Tema.
