Union of informal workers Mourns Lives Lost in Ghana Air Force Helicopter Crash

The Union of Informal Workers Associations (UNIWA) have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of eight individuals in the Ghanaian Air Force helicopter crash that occurred on August 6, 2025, in the Ashanti Region. The incident claimed the lives of Hon. Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister for Defense, the Environment Minister, and other dedicated military personnel and public servants.

In a press release issued 8th August 2025, UNIWA extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. “We mourn the loss of our leaders and brave public servants who dedicated their lives to serving our nation,”the statement read “Their sacrifices will not be forgotten.”

The organization, which represents 21 member associations and thousands of informal workers across Ghana, stressed the importance of recognizing the risks faced by public servants daily. “As informal workers who form the backbone of Ghana’s economy, we understand the challenges and dangers that come with public service,” the statement read. “This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced safety measures across all sectors, particularly in transportation systems used by public service workers.”

UNIWA also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash to prevent similar incidents in the future. “We urge the government to take immediate action to ensure the safety of all workers, whether they are in formal or informal sectors,” the statement read.

In a show of solidarity, UNIWA announced its participation in the state funeral scheduled for August 15, 2025, honoring the memory of those lost. “We stand united with the Government and people of Ghana during this period of national mourning,” the statement read.

The tragic event has resonated deeply within the nation, prompting widespread expressions of grief and calls for improved safety regulations in public service.
