Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang returned to Ghana on Thursday, May 22, 2025, after undergoing medical treatment in the UK.

She was warmly welcomed at the Kotoka International Airport by President John Dramani Mahama, First Lady Lordina Mahama, senior government officials, and family members.

In a brief statement, the Vice President expressed heartfelt gratitude to God, her medical team, and the Mahama family for their support. “God’s mercies have been infinite,” she said, while also commending her doctors for their swift and effective care.

She paid special tribute to President Mahama for his timely intervention and to Ibrahim Mahama, the President’s brother, for his unwavering personal support. “He came to sit by me, and that was healing itself,” she remarked emotionally.

“…I’m very grateful. But I need to isolate, beyond family and friends, your brother, Mr. Ibrahim. He stopped at nothing to ensure that I had what I needed. And then he also came to the hospital. He came to sit by me, and that was healing by itself. So, my little boss, I’m very, very grateful,” she said.

Ready to resume her duties, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed her commitment to national development, stating, “There’s so much to do, and with collective will, we’ll achieve more for our country.”

Welcoming his Vice President, President John Dramani Mahama expressed how deeply she had been missed during her absence.

“I Particular, I have missed you because even traveling out of the country has been difficult. They have threatened to impeach me for going Togo while you were away.”

Background

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reportedly fell ill on Friday, March 28, 2025, and was admitted to UGMC the following day. After receiving preliminary care at UGMC, she was flown to the UK for further medical attention.

President John Dramani Mahama publicly addressed the Vice President’s health during several engagements. At the official launch of the government’s nationwide sanitary pad distribution initiative on Thursday, April 24, 2025, he reassured the public of her recovery and expressed optimism about her return.

“I wish to extend the greetings of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to all of you,” he said. “I spoke to her yesterday and told her we were going to miss her at this event because this is a programme very dear to her. She said I should say hello to all of you and let you know she’s recuperating and catching a bit of rest. She is very well and will soon join us to continue prosecuting the Reset Agenda.”

During his ‘Thank You Tour’ in Dodowa on Friday, May 16, President Mahama once again spoke about the Vice President’s condition, stating:

“I’m happy to say that I spoke to her yesterday morning, and she will be back in the country before the end of next week. By God’s grace, she is fully recovered and ready to resume her duties.”
