Portions of the Accra to the North Highway road that passes through Sovie in the Kpando Municipality of the Volta Region is gradually becoming a death trap. Activities of erosion is gradually washing away portions of the road and thereby making it very dangerous for use especially at night.

In view of this there is a clarion call on appropriate authorities to take needed actions to fix that portion of the road to prevent unnecessary accidents and possible loss of lives.

What was once a vital lifeline connecting Accra to the Northern part of the country through Sovie in the Kpando Municipality of the Volta Region is gradually transforming into a hazardous gauntlet for travelers. Portions of the highway road is gradually eroding as a result of erosion activities.

According to residents in the area, portions of the road caved in about two years ago, leading to the  destruction of the shoulders and pedestrian section of the road. The continuous eroding postions of the road now poses a significant danger particularly at night when visibility is reduced.

In an interview with GBCNEWS the Assemblyman for the area, Mr Michael Tshorhe, said close calls and stories of near-miss accidents have become common, underscoring the urgent need for intervention before tragedy strikes.

According to him while local citizens have taken it upon themselves to highlight the situation, reaching out to the regional highway officials and the Kpando Municipal Assembly, their calls for action have not yielded any positive response.

“This section of the road caved in two years ago. This report was made to the regional office of Ghana Highways and several letters to the Kpando MCE  but up till now, nothing has been done about it.  The road is eroding gradually and i will not be surprised to be hearing or seeing accidents here again.”, he said.

Mr Tshorhe added “The Assembly should be able to come and put some caution tapes here. So we are pleading with the authorities concerned that they should come to our aid and give us a good piece of work here”.

As the erosion’s toll on the road becomes more evident each day, the community’s plea for assistance is becomes increasingly urgent, echoing the need for swift actions to save precious lives.
