Dialogue on issues, eschew attacks – National House of Chiefs tells MPs

The National House of Chiefs has expressed concern about matters arising in Parliament after the presentation of the 2022 Budget.

The House called for dialogue and engagement on broad national issues to arrive at consensus.

The President of the House, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi, speaking at the end of year meeting of the house, said the equal numerical strength in the 8th Parliament is an indication that Ghanaians want the legislators to work together.

Members of the House were educated on the activities of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee, PIAC and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, GNPC.

Among areas covered by PIAC were the efficient and productive utilization of the petroleum resources, the effect of lack of permanent development plan, and the need for proper rendering of accounts by government as well as state institutions that are direct beneficiaries of petroleum resources.

The GNPC indicated its intention to bring on stream very soon the Voltaian basin onshore oil which feasibility study started in 1962.

Chairman of PIAC, Professor Kwame Adom Frimpong, was not happy that a high percentage of funding for the Free Senior High school education is coming from the oil revenue.

He stressed the need for alternative sources in the event of depletion of the mineral resources.

The General Manager, Sustainability, at GNPC Foundation, Dr Kwame Baah Nuako, announced that very soon Ghana will start producing oil from the Voltaian basin.

The President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi, condemned recent developments in Parliament over the presentation of government economic policy and the 2022 Budget.

The Omanhene of Drobo Traditional area, Okokyeredom Sakyi Arko expressed satisfaction with the work of PIAC and GNPC, and hope they will continue to deliver on their mandate.
