Ghana grateful to Algeria for supporting bid for seat on UN Security Council

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has expressed appreciation on behalf of the government of Ghana to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria for supporting the West African Country in her bid for a seat on the UN Security Council and to host the Secretariat of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area.Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey described Algeria as “a friend we do not take for granted”.

She said this on January 10, 2022 when the Ambassador-Designate of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Republic of Ghana, HE Ali Redjei presented his open letters to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

Madam Ayorkor Botchwey who was full of praise to Algeria for their support in such milestones achieved by Ghana called for more collaborations between the two nations in the future.“Let me thank your government for the strong support we received when we were bidding for a seat on the UN Security Council. I was very impressed with the support when I met with the African Group…Algeria supported us when we were bidding for the Secretariat of the Africa Continental Free Trade and so we would want to see more robust corporations between our two countries.”She gave assurances that Ghana will share information from Security Council with her colleagues from Africa to ensure that the rest of the Continent is abreast of happenings at the UN Security Council Meetings.

In response, the Ambassador-Designate of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Republic of Ghana, Mr. Ali Redjei said “at the political level my country hopes to intensify consultations with your country as a member of the UN Security Council and Chair of ECOWAS with a view of consolidate security stability in Africa”.Ghana assumed non- permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council earlier this month. In line with that a flag raising ceremony was held at the UN headquarters to signify the official admission of Ghana and four other countries that were elected as non-permanent members of the Security Council last June to begin their 2-year tenure.

This will be the third time Ghana will be taking her seat as a non-permanent member, with the last appearance being 15 years ago.
