Nations across the world are all doing their best to evacuate their nationals from Ukraine, due to Russia’s invasion, and Ghana is no exception. After various attempts by the government of Ghana, some Ghanaian students are back home.

GBC’s Darroll Alan Tagoe sat with one of the returnees in a riveting interview on the GTV Breakfast Show.

Nana Kwakye Agyemang spoke of how he received the news of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to the President of NUGS Chernivtsi – Ukraine, Nana Kwakye  Agyemang, he got a call from one of his friends, who broke the news to him.

”And I was like bro. ‘ewo se yeba fie’ meaning, (we need to go home) speaking the local Ghanaian Twi dialect.

And the next thing was that he had to contact his Vice President to organize the students, he said.

Nana Kwakye Agyemang said they had a communication team and everyone was informed to keep calm, and also had an evacuation team that was constantly communicating with the government.

”The issue was with the carrying of bags and baggage, because the girls had a lot with them and we the guys travelled very lightly. And we had to carry the ladies’ bags and we gave ours to them. The ladies were carrying sauce pans and things, and I don’t know what they were going to do with those”, he lamented.

According to the NUGS President, he kept assuring the students that they would be evacuated to Ghana, even though it was difficult to journey, but they ”found a way of making it fun, by cracking jokes on the way”, as survival skills set in.

He said they were thirty-seven (37 ) in number that moved and  he is still in touch with some Ghanaians who are in Ukraine.

According to Nana Kwakye Agyemang, the government of Ghana covered the travelling expenses back to Accra.

He expressed gratitude to the government and people of Ghana for their support.
