The body of a five-year old boy was yesterday retrieved from a storm drain at Gumani following a downpour in the Sagnarigu municipality of the Northern region.
He was believed to have been swept by flood waters into the storm drain from Choggu-Yapalsi almost a kilometre from where he was found.
The deceased was on his way home from school when the incident occurred after a downpour that lasted about four hours.
The deceased, whose name was given as Clement was a kindergarten one pupil of Choggu-Yakpalsi M. A School, located near one of the major drains in the municipality.
It took the intervention of passers-by to retrieve the body from the deep storm drain which was filled with flood water, before the arrival of the police.
The Head teacher confirmed that the deceased was in school early in the morning before the unfortunate incident.
It took the Northern Regional Police nearly two hours before they arrived at the scene and conveyed the body to the police station.
The body was later released to the family for burial after several consultations with the family on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, the school’s authorities have been invited by the police for further investigations surrounding the death of the boy.
Some residents who thronged the scene attributed the incident to the poor drainage system in the area and called on the authorities to fix it.
At least nine deaths have been recorded in the Tamale metropolis and Sagnerigu municipality since 2017 over water related issues.
In July 2017, a 59-year-old woman who was rushing to pick her child from school in her car was washed away by flood on her arrival at the storm drain.
