771 lives lost to road accidents so far in 2021

Statistics from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana police service point to road accidents as the cause of death for 771 persons within the first trimester this year.

The number which is more than the total number of COVID-19 deaths since March last year is a 29.58 percent increase from the same period in 2020.

The statistics also indicate that 1,583 of the over 4,000 cases reported involved motorcycles.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, the Director in charge of Education, Training and Research of the police MTTD, Supt. Alexander Obeng attributed the road accidents to the nature of the roads and other factors.

He admitted that the road safety issues have not received the needed attention over the years.
