The Director of Ghana School of Law (GSL) popularly known as Makola, Mr. Yaw Oppong has disclosed that about 846 law students from his outfit were called to the Ghana Bar in a day.
According to him, that was the highest in the history of the school since 1877 when the first person’s name was entered in a book known as the Roll of Lawyers.
Mr. Oppong disclosed this on the Scoop Segment on, the Breakfast Show with Kafui Dey on Thursday, December 1, 2022.
He said the first person whose name was entered in the book called the Roll of Lawyers which has the names of everybody who has been called into the BAR was an English man. If I remember correctly. The GSL Director added.
Mr. Oppong explained that the highest number of people who have been called into the Ghana BAR on a single day has been 424 and that was in the year 2020. And in two years the number has doubled to 846 Lawyers.
On the issue of many people wanting to enter law school but are not able to gain admission due to some restrictions deliberately put in place by the handlers of GSL, the GSL Director refuted claims that there are restrictions deliberately put in place to reduce numbers.
“I do agree that many Ghanaians or people living in this country that are qualified and eligible to become lawyers will become lawyers. There are no inhibitions. There are no restrictions to reduce numbers, or to admit a few.” Mr. Oppong assured.
He said “since I became the director of the school in April this year, I have never seen and before then I was a lecturer, and have been associated with the school. You will be surprised by those who are at the helm of affairs, nearly 80% of them have had their own children or relatives also feel entrance exams. So you think that if there was a restriction, they will put it on their own children, or relatives? No, there’s no way that can happen. In any case, these are eminent personalities that if their children feel they will not say that find another way to add them, they will never do it they have the integrity to protect.”
