An elderly man in his 50s fell victim to a speeding vehicle on Sunday, November 26, near Charles Lwanga School at Abeka in the Greater Accra Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the driver of the speeding vehicle failed to apply the brakes in time upon seeing the elderly man crossing the road.

The unnamed elderly man had just purchased some items and was on his way home when the incident transpired.

Onlookers from the community swiftly came to the scene, assisting in placing the injured man into the private car that hit him. He was subsequently transported to the Emmanuel Clinic.

Reports from those who accompanied him to the hospital indicate that the elderly man is alive but has sustained multiple injuries.

Eyewitness Charles Ebli recounted, “I was standing at the roadside with my friends when we saw the vehicle speeding, but we did not see the old man, so all we saw was the car close to the old man. The driver did not see the old man, and he hit him, but he was able to hit the brakes in time, preventing a potentially fatal outcome.”

Ebli emphasised the need for drivers and motorcycle riders to stop speeding, especially when approaching communities along the road.

The residents urged government to install speed bumps on the road, particularly in the communities, to enhance road safety. Notably, there was no police presence at the scene of the incident.
