Two people have been confirmed dead and 14 others rescued following the collapse of a four-storey building at Accra New Town as search and rescue operations continue at the scene.

The incident occurred at the premises of the Experimental D/A School, where the structure believed to be uncompleted and used by Christian worshippers collapsed, trapping several occupants beneath the debris.

A coordinated rescue effort is currently underway, involving the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Ambulance Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Emergency teams are working in close coordination to locate and rescue victims still believed to be trapped, with operations continuing under challenging conditions. The area has been cordoned off by police to prevent public intrusion and ensure the safety of both rescuers and residents, as heavy equipment and specialised tools are deployed to clear the rubble.

Earlier, local residents joined initial rescue efforts, using basic tools and their bare hands to pull survivors from the debris before the arrival of emergency services.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing calls for help from beneath the wreckage, heightening the urgency of the ongoing operation.

Authorities have urged residents and the general public to stay away from the site to allow rescue teams to carry out their work effectively.

The incident has renewed concerns over structural safety and the use of uncompleted buildings for public gatherings in densely populated communities.

Rescue teams say operations will continue until all trapped persons are accounted for, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
